A Centre for the community

The new community centre will be on the North West lawn of the churchyard.  Access from the church will be by way of a covered path from a door in the North West corner of the church, in order to keep open the existing pathway round the church.  The front of the building will be aligned with the end of the row of shops in Clarence Street so as not to interfere with the view of the church from the north.  There will be an entrance into the centre from the Clarence Street end.

The community centre will be two storeys high, with a basement.  Click here to see plans of the new building.  These plans illustrate  possible uses to which the building will be put: discussions about the precise nature of these arrangements are continuing, and even when it is built the ways in which it is used will develop and change, so the final arrangements may not be exactly as shown here.

On the ground floor we hope to site the Visitor Information Service of the Royal Borough of Kingston. From here it will be possible to gain access to the range of services currently on offer in the ground floor of the Market House in the Market Place. The remainder of the ground floor will house a café to act as a catering and hospitality hub to the building. We intend that this will be an affordable social enterprise and are exploring ways to use it to provide employment for those who find it difficult or impossible to find work.

On the first floor will be an administrative office; a room to house a low cost counselling service to provide a wide range of support for people in need; a meeting room with technical facilities which could be used for a range of purposes, including education, training and business meetings; and a servery to provide simple refreshments

In the basement will be the main site for toilets (there will be two in the church itself) as well as another meeting room, with the flexibility to allow for a wide range of activities including, perhaps, youth work. The plant facilities for the whole site, to provide heat, light and electricity, will also be here
